Cambodia exports two million tonnes of agricultural products in first five months

A total of 1.9 million tonnes of agricultural products have been exported in the first five months of this year, a 7 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Of the total exported agricultural products, milled rice was accounted for about 350,000 tonnes, up 42 percent.

Ngin Chhay, Director-General of Agriculture at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, said that rice export shared a biggest part of the total export of agricultural products, and China was the biggest market for Cambodian rice.

The high growth of Cambodia’s rice export during the first five months may be associated with COVID-19 which has led to high demand for foods, he added.

“Despite COVID-19 pandemic, the export of agricultural products is on the rise,” Mr Chhay underlined in a press conference at the Office of the Council of Ministers.

Based on this growing trend, Cambodia is expected to export up to 800,000 or a million tonnes of milled rice by the end of this year, Mr Chhay said, continuing that the export of all agricultural products would reach over 5 million tonnes this year.

Cambodia has in total 4.8 million hectares of cultivation land and the potential crops for exports are rice, cassava, cashew nut, mango, corn, banana, longan, pepper, and dragon fruit, according to the ministry.
