The German Cooperative and Raiffeisen Confederation (DGRV), a federation of German cooperatives, yesterday pledged to continue its support of local agricultural cooperatives for three more years.
A memorandum of understanding signed yesterday by Hean Vanhan, director of the General Directorate of Agriculture, and Hardy Schneider, director of DGRV’s programme, extended the confederation’s presence in the Kingdom until 2020.
DGRV’s programme, which started in 2010, provides support to agricultural cooperatives, mainly by training officials on the management of data related to agricultural communities.
“DGRV’s presence in Cambodia is important in boosting and developing agricultural communities, which help farmers improve productivity, and establish contract farming schemes that ensure the prices of agricultural commodities remain stable,” Mr Vanhan said during the signing ceremony.
“With the number of farmers decreasing throughout the nation, agricultural communities are important because they help farmers develop skills, decrease production costs, and find more buyers for their products.”
According to Mr Vanhan, DGRV helped Cambodia draft the Law on Agricultural Cooperatives in 2013. Since then, about 880 agricultural cooperatives and six unions have been established in Cambodia.
