The Ministry of Agriculture this week issued a new set of requirements for cattle traders which aims to up quality standards in the livestock industry, prevent diseases and boost trade with other nations.
The ministry urged exporters of live cattle to adhere to higher quality standards, and said they must comply with the new regulations before July.
“The companies need to improve their standards of quality because Vietnam will soon enforce stricter requirements on cattle imports,” said Sen Sovann, director of the General Directorate of Animal Health and Production.
According to Mr Sovann, Vietnam is the biggest buyer of Cambodian cattle.
The July deadline may be extended for firms that are working to meet the new requirements but need more time, he said.
Last year, Cambodia exported more than 100,000 cattle, mostly cows, to Vietnam. Only three companies were involved in this kind of trade, Mr Sovann said.
